Why solar works here

The high desert gets more sun than almost anywhere in Southern California. Most of it lands on your roof.

Palmdale and Lancaster sit at about 2,650 feet with clear skies most of the year. That means more usable sunlight per panel than the coast, so a well-designed system can offset a large share of a typical household's usage.

Southern California Edison's rates rose sharply in 2025 and eased only slightly in 2026, with more base-rate increases already approved through 2028, and summer air conditioning pushes many AV homes into the most expensive time-of-use periods. Under SCE's Net Billing Tariff, energy you send to the grid earns much less than energy you use yourself, so pairing solar with a home battery is where most of the savings now come from.

Public Safety Power Shutoffs and wind-related outages are part of life on the edge of the desert. A battery covers essentials for hours; a Generac standby generator covers the whole house for days. We install both and will tell you honestly which one fits your home. Read our 2026 guide to whether solar is worth it here.

A day on Net Billing

How a solar + battery home runs under SCE's Net Billing

Since NEM 3.0, exporting solar to SCE earns little. The savings now come from using your own power at the right hours, and that is what a battery is for. Here is the shape of a typical day.

  1. 01Roughly 06:00–16:00

    Morning to afternoon

Solar runs the house. The surplus charges the battery.

Daytime production covers what the home is using and fills the battery. Under SCE's Net Billing (NEM 3.0), anything you push to the grid instead is credited at far less than what you pay for power, so the goal is to keep as much of it on-site as you can.

    How Net Billing credits work
  2. 0216:00–21:00 · SCE peak

    Peak window

The battery powers the house, not the grid.

SCE's TOU-D-PRIME peak runs 4 to 9 PM, when the sun is going down and air conditioners are still on. A home with storage draws on what it banked at noon instead of buying its most expensive power of the day.

  3. 0321:00–06:00 · Or any outage

    Night and outages

Battery carries the essentials. A Generac carries the whole house.

Overnight the battery covers the fridge, lights, Wi-Fi and medical equipment, and it does the same when a Public Safety Power Shutoff hits. For days-long outages or a full-house load, a Generac standby generator takes over automatically.

    Generac standby generators

Peak hours are SCE's current TOU-D-PRIME schedule and daylight varies through the year. Whether a battery pays for itself depends on your usage and rate plan, so we model it from your actual bill, with and without storage, before you decide. Los Angeles city homes on LADWP are still on net metering and the picture is different there.

Questions

Questions Antelope Valley homeowners ask us first

The six we hear most, answered the way we would on the phone. More on our full FAQ page.

01Is solar still worth it in the Antelope Valley now that the federal tax credit ended?

For many homes, yes. The 30% federal credit for homeowner-purchased systems ended for installs completed after December 31, 2025, but the Antelope Valley still has some of the strongest sun in Southern California, and SCE has more rate increases approved through 2028. The math now depends on your usage, your rate plan and whether you add a battery, so we run real numbers from your bill instead of guessing.

02How much does a solar system cost?

It depends on system size, roof type, equipment and whether you add storage. We give you a written, itemized quote after reviewing your bill and roof, and we show you cash, loan and $0-down options side by side. There's no charge for the consultation or the design.

03Do I need a battery with solar in SCE territory?

Under SCE's NEM 3.0 Net Billing, power you export earns far less than power you use directly, so storing daytime solar for the evening protects your savings. A battery also keeps essentials running during an outage. We'll show you the numbers with and without storage so you can decide.

04Who actually does the installation?

Our own crews. SunCoast Solar is licensed and insured, working under CSLB General Building license #1028836 and C-10 electrical license #1105123. We pull the permit, handle the utility paperwork and schedule the inspection.

05What areas do you serve?

We're based in Palmdale and work throughout the Antelope Valley, including Lancaster, Littlerock, Rosamond and California City, plus Victorville, Bakersfield and the Los Angeles area. If you're nearby and unsure, call us.

06What warranty comes with a SunCoast system?

Installed solar systems come with a 25-year warranty and a 25-year written production guarantee, on top of the manufacturer warranties for panels, inverters and batteries. We put the specifics in writing before you sign anything.
