Generac generators

Generac home standby generators in Palmdale and the Antelope Valley

When wind shuts off the grid or a summer heat wave overloads it, a Generac standby generator starts itself and runs the whole house on natural gas or propane. SunCoast is a Generac Certified Dealer and Installer, so the sale, the install and the annual service all come from one local team.

Who needs a standby generator in the high desert

Batteries cover short outages. A generator is for the long ones, and for the loads a battery cannot carry.

The Antelope Valley gets two kinds of outages: the short, unexplained ones and the long, planned ones. Public safety power shutoffs during high-wind events can last a day or more, and summer heat waves push the grid to the point where SCE sheds load. If someone in your house depends on medical equipment, if you work from home, if you have a freezer full of food, or if you simply do not want to sit in a 95-degree house waiting for the utility, a generator is the equipment that answers the problem.

Rural properties in east Palmdale, Littlerock and Rosamond have a second reason: a well pump. No power means no water, and a well pump is a large motor load that a small battery cannot start. A standby generator handles it without a thought. If you are weighing a generator against a battery, or want both, we install each and can tell you honestly which fits your situation.

Good fit if…

  1. Multi-day outages or PSPS watches hit your area, such as Littlerock, the foothill edges or rural lots
  2. You need to run a well pump, central air or medical equipment without interruption
  3. Natural gas is at the house, or there is room for a propane tank
  4. Someone at home depends on refrigerated medication or powered medical devices

Not the right fit if…

  1. You lose power for a few hours a few times a year; a battery handles that silently
  2. Your main goal is a lower SCE bill; a generator does not reduce the bill
  3. HOA rules or lot setbacks leave no compliant spot for the unit and its exhaust
  4. You are not prepared for fuel, oil changes and annual service

Benefits

What a Generac standby generator gives you

  1. 01

    Automatic, hands-off backup

When SCE power drops, the transfer switch senses it and the generator starts on its own within seconds. You do not have to be home, awake or anywhere near a pull cord.

  2. 02

    Runs for days, not hours

A standby generator burns natural gas from your utility line or propane from a tank, so it keeps going through a multi-day public safety shutoff long after a battery would be empty.

  3. 03

Sized to run your air conditioning

Losing power in a Palmdale August is a health issue, not an inconvenience. We size the unit and the load management so central air, the fridge and the well pump can run together.

  4. 04

Sold, installed and serviced by a certified dealer

SunCoast is a Generac Certified Dealer and Installer. The same team handles the sale, the gas and electrical work, the warranty registration and the annual service afterward.

  5. 05

    Pairs with solar and PWRcell

Generac makes both the generator and the PWRcell battery, and we install both. A combined design gives you silent daily backup from the battery and long-duration coverage from the generator.

  6. 06

    Permitted and inspected, not improvised

Gas piping, the concrete pad, the transfer switch and the setbacks from windows are all code items. Our B and C-10 licenses cover the whole job, and the city signs off on it.

The process

How a generator install works

Gas, electrical, concrete and permits, all coordinated by us.

  1. 01

    Home assessment

We walk the property, look at your electrical panel and gas meter, identify the loads you want covered and find a placement that meets code clearances and keeps noise away from bedrooms.

  2. 02

    Generator sizing and quote

Based on your loads we recommend a Generac model and transfer switch, with or without load management, and give you a written price that includes gas, electrical, pad and permit.

  3. 03

    Permits and utility coordination

We pull the building, electrical and gas permits with the city or county and coordinate any gas meter upgrade with the utility if the existing meter cannot supply the generator.

  4. 04

    Installation

The pad is set, the unit placed, gas line run and tested, and the automatic transfer switch wired by our C-10 electricians. Most residential installs finish in a day or two on site.

  5. 05

    Startup, inspection and registration

We commission the generator, run it under load, pass the final inspection, register the Generac warranty and connect the mobile monitoring app so you can see its status anywhere.

What to know before you buy a generator

Fuel, placement, transfer switches, maintenance and the paperwork nobody mentions in the ads.

Fuel supply

Natural gas is the simplest option because it never runs out and requires no tank. The catch is that a generator needs a certain gas volume and pressure, and the existing meter on an older home is sometimes too small once the furnace, water heater and range are added up. When that happens the gas utility has to upgrade the meter, which adds time to the schedule. We check this during the assessment so it does not surprise you mid-project. Propane works the same way from a tank; a larger tank means more days of runtime, and the tank placement has its own code clearances.

Transfer switch and load management

The automatic transfer switch is the brain of the system. It watches utility power, starts the generator when the grid fails, moves your house onto generator power, and reverses the process when the grid returns. A whole-house switch backs up everything; a managed switch backs up everything but staggers large loads such as air conditioning so a smaller, less expensive generator can cover them. Which is right for you comes down to the load calculation, and we walk through both.

Placement and code

The generator sits on a level pad with required distances from windows, doors, vents and property lines to keep exhaust away from living space. It also needs service access on all sides. On tight Palmdale and Lancaster lots this can take some creativity, and we find the spot before quoting so there are no changes later. The work is permitted with your city or county under our B General Building license (CSLB #1028836) for the pad and gas work and our C-10 license (CSLB #1105123) for the electrical, and it is inspected before we hand it over.

Maintenance and warranty

A generator that sits idle for months still needs oil changes and a load test. Generac recommends annual servicing for air-cooled units, and the unit runs a brief self-test on a schedule to keep the engine healthy. Because SunCoast is a certified dealer, warranty registration and service are handled here in the valley, and you can reach our Generac team directly at Generac@suncoastsolar.net or through our Generac dealer page.

Cost and financing

The installed price includes the unit, transfer switch, pad, gas line, electrical, permits and startup. Generators do not qualify for solar tax credits or SGIP rebates, but they can be financed, and they are often bundled with a solar or battery project. The financing page covers the options, and the incentives page explains which programs apply to which equipment.

Questions

Standby generator questions

01How is a standby generator different from a portable one?

A home standby generator is permanently installed outside on a pad, connected to your gas line and wired to your electrical panel through an automatic transfer switch. It starts on its own when the power fails and shuts off when it returns. A portable unit has to be rolled out, fueled and plugged in by hand every time, which is hard to do in the dark during a windstorm and unsafe if done incorrectly.

02What size Generac generator does my house need?

It depends on which loads you want running at once. Essentials such as the refrigerator, lights, internet and a furnace fan take a smaller unit. Adding central air conditioning, an electric range or a well pump moves you up in size or into a unit with load management that sequences large appliances. We do a load calculation during the home assessment rather than guessing from square footage.

03Does a standby generator need maintenance?

Yes. Generac recommends annual servicing for its air-cooled home standby units, which covers oil and filter changes, spark plugs, battery check and a load test. The generator also exercises itself on a schedule so problems surface before an outage. As a certified dealer we offer that service, and we can set up a plan when the unit is installed.

04Can I have both solar with a battery and a generator?

Yes, and for extended outages it is the most complete setup. The battery handles brief interruptions silently and shifts solar into evening hours every day. The generator takes over for long shutoffs when the battery cannot keep up. Because SunCoast installs solar, Generac PWRcell batteries and Generac generators, we design the transfer sequence so the equipment works together instead of fighting.

05Where does the generator go, and is it loud?

It sits on a pad outside, typically near the gas meter and electrical panel, and must keep code-required distances from windows, doors and property lines. Modern air-cooled units are roughly as loud as a central air conditioning condenser when running. We place it to keep noise away from bedrooms and neighbors where the property allows.

06Do I need natural gas, or can I use propane?

Either. Homes with SoCalGas service usually run on natural gas, which never runs out. Rural properties in Littlerock, Rosamond or the east side of the valley that are not on gas service can run on propane from a tank, and the tank size determines how many days of runtime you have. We confirm the fuel supply and pressure during the assessment.

07Is a generator eligible for any incentives?

Generally no. Federal solar tax credits and California SGIP rebates apply to solar and battery storage, not to fuel-burning generators. Financing is available, and the generator can be bundled with solar or a battery on one project. See our financing page for options.
