Local knowledge
What going solar in Lancaster actually involves
In 2013 Lancaster became the first city in the United States to require solar on most new homes, and the city has treated rooftop solar as normal infrastructure ever since. That history shows up in the permit counter: the City of Lancaster Building & Safety now issues instant permits for roof-mounted residential solar and battery storage through an automated platform called Symbium, adopted in November 2024. A code-compliant design is approved without a manual plan check, which takes days or weeks off a typical project timeline.
Lancaster sits at about 2,350 feet on the floor of the Antelope Valley and is known for wind. Afternoon gusts sweep across the west side and Antelope Acres with very little to slow them down, so roof attachments, rail spans and panel clamps are specified for real wind load rather than a generic spec. Summers are hot and dry, winters clear and cold, and the sun is dependable in every month, which is why solar production per panel here is as good as anywhere in the state.
Housing varies a lot by ZIP. Central and older Lancaster (93534) has 1950s–1970s homes with composition shingle, smaller electrical panels and sometimes a few roof layers to check. The east side (93535) mixes older homes with newer subdivisions, and the west side (93536) is mostly 1990s-and-later tract construction with concrete tile roofs and 200-amp service. We inspect the roof, the main panel and the attic before quoting so there are no surprises, and we will recommend a panel upgrade or a re-roof first when that is the honest answer.
Every Lancaster address is served by Southern California Edison under NEM 3.0 Net Billing. Because SCE pays little for exported power and charges the most between 4 and 9 p.m., a battery that stores your midday production for the evening is central to the savings math here, and SGIP rebates can offset part of the battery cost for income-qualified and high-fire-threat households (the general-market budget was closed at our last check). Central Lancaster is rarely inside SCE's Public Safety Power Shutoff zones, but the foothill areas west toward Lake Hughes and Leona Valley are, and wind-related outages happen valley-wide. Batteries handle the short ones; a Generac standby generator handles the long ones.
If your home is in unincorporated Quartz Hill or Antelope Acres rather than inside city limits, the permit goes through Los Angeles County Public Works Building & Safety, whose Antelope Valley district office is on East Avenue K-6 in Lancaster. We work with both offices regularly and handle the SCE interconnection application either way.

Questions
Lancaster solar questions
Straight answers to what Lancaster homeowners ask us most.
01Do you pull permits with the City of Lancaster?
Yes. We submit residential rooftop solar and battery projects through the City of Lancaster's automated permitting platform, which issues a permit as soon as the design passes its code check. Projects that fall outside the automated criteria go to Building & Safety staff for review, and we manage that too.
02How does SCE NEM 3.0 affect Lancaster homeowners?
Under NEM 3.0 Net Billing, the credit for solar you export is well below the price you pay for power in the evening. A properly sized system still cuts your bill, but adding a battery so you use your own production during the 4–9 p.m. peak is what makes solar in Lancaster pay off the way it used to.
03My Lancaster home is older. Can it still go solar?
Usually, yes. Homes in 93534 often have composition shingle and 100-amp panels. We check roof condition and layers, and if a main panel upgrade or re-roof is needed we quote it clearly rather than installing over a problem. Our C-10 electrical license covers panel upgrades in-house.
04Is Lancaster wind a problem for rooftop solar?
Not when the array is engineered for it. We use attachments and rail spacing rated for Antelope Valley wind loads, and every system carries our 25-year warranty and written production guarantee.
05Is there a federal tax credit for Lancaster homeowners in 2026?
No. The residential credit ended for systems placed in service after December 31, 2025. Businesses and third-party-owned residential systems such as leases and PPAs can still use the Section 48E credit through 2027, and SGIP battery rebates are available to income-qualified and high-fire-threat households; the general-market budget in SCE territory was closed at our last check.
06What if my address is in Quartz Hill or Antelope Acres?
Those are unincorporated Los Angeles County, so the permit goes through LA County Public Works Building & Safety's Antelope Valley office in Lancaster instead of the city. We pull permits there regularly. Your utility is still SCE.
