Solar panels and battery installation in Los Angeles, CA

Los Angeles is our second-busiest market after Palmdale, and the biggest reason is the utility: LADWP customers still get retail-rate net metering that SCE customers lost. We have pulled permits and installed across the city, with most of our work in the San Fernando Valley, an hour down the 14 from our office.

Local knowledge

What going solar in Los Angeles actually involves

The first question for any Los Angeles address is which utility serves it. Inside the city of Los Angeles, that is the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power. LADWP is municipally owned, is not regulated by the CPUC and did not adopt NEM 3.0. Its Net Energy Metering Rider credits the solar you export at the energy rate on your bill, so a system sized to your annual usage can offset most of it without a battery. Unincorporated county areas, Santa Clarita and neighboring cities are Southern California Edison under NEM 3.0, where a battery becomes much more important. We confirm your utility from a recent bill before we design anything.

Most of our Los Angeles installs are in the San Fernando Valley: Sylmar, Granada Hills, Porter Ranch, Chatsworth, Northridge, Sunland-Tujunga, Reseda and Woodland Hills. Valley summers are hot and the sun is strong, and the housing stock is older than the Antelope Valley's: a lot of 1950s–1970s ranch homes with composition shingle, some Spanish tile, and 100-amp main panels that often need an upgrade before solar, a battery or an EV charger can be added. Because we hold a C-10 electrical license, panel upgrades are done by our own crew rather than a subcontractor.

Permits in the city of Los Angeles go through the Los Angeles Department of Building and Safety. Standard residential rooftop systems that fit LADBS's criteria can be issued as express permits or through SolarAPP+ in about a day; larger systems, ground mounts, hillside lots and most battery projects go through plan check, which takes longer. Separately, LADWP handles the interconnection and installs the net meter. We manage both tracks, and we tell you at the quote stage which one your project falls into so the timeline is realistic.

Incentives work differently in the city. The federal residential credit ended for systems placed in service after 2025, but the Section 48E business credit is still available through 2027 for commercial solar and for third-party-owned residential systems such as leases and PPAs. California's SGIP battery rebate is administered by the investor-owned utilities, so LADWP customers are generally not eligible; we will tell you what LADWP itself is offering at the time of your quote rather than guess.

LADWP is not part of the CPUC Public Safety Power Shutoff program, but the city still sees heat-wave outages and equipment failures, and hillside neighborhoods in the Valley and foothills sit in high fire-hazard zones. For homeowners who want power during an outage, a battery covers the essentials for hours, and a Generac standby generator covers days. Commercial customers, from Valley warehouses to small multi-unit buildings, get the same design-and-permit process with the 48E credit in the numbers.

Why here

Why solar works in Los Angeles

  1. 01

    Retail-rate credit from LADWP

LADWP's net metering rider credits exports at your energy rate. Solar without a battery still makes strong financial sense in the city.

  2. 02

    Panel upgrades in-house

Older Valley homes often need a 200-amp panel. Our C-10 licensed electricians handle it as part of the job.

  3. 03

    Commercial 48E credit through 2027

Businesses and third-party-owned residential systems can still claim the federal business credit.

  4. 04

    Two-track permitting handled

LADBS for the building permit, LADWP for interconnection. We manage both and set expectations honestly.

Questions

Los Angeles solar questions

Straight answers to what Los Angeles homeowners ask us most.

01Is my Los Angeles home on LADWP or SCE?

If your address is inside the city of Los Angeles, your electric utility is LADWP. Unincorporated county areas, Santa Clarita and other incorporated cities in the county are usually SCE. Your bill says which, and it changes the design: LADWP credits exports at retail, while SCE's NEM 3.0 pays far less and makes a battery more important.

02How is LADWP net metering different from SCE NEM 3.0?

LADWP's Net Energy Metering Rider credits the solar you send back at the energy rate on your rate schedule, and credits roll forward. SCE's NEM 3.0 credits exports at avoided-cost rates that are a fraction of retail. That is why a system without a battery can still offset most of an LADWP bill.

03Do you pull permits with LADBS?

Yes. Qualifying residential rooftop systems are submitted for an LADBS express permit or through SolarAPP+, which usually issues within a day. Larger systems, hillside lots and most battery projects go through plan check. We also submit the separate LADWP interconnection application and coordinate the net meter.

04Can LADWP customers get the SGIP battery rebate?

Generally no. SGIP is administered by the investor-owned utilities such as SCE and PG&E, so it does not apply to LADWP customers. We will tell you what LADWP programs are current when we quote your project rather than promise a rebate you cannot use.

05Is there still a federal tax credit for solar in Los Angeles?

Not for homeowner-owned systems placed in service after December 31, 2025. The Section 48E business credit remains through 2027 for commercial systems and for third-party-owned residential systems such as leases and PPAs, which our $0-down programs can use.

06How far do you travel into Los Angeles?

We serve the whole city, with the San Fernando Valley about an hour from our Palmdale office via the 14 and the 5. We have pulled permits and installed across Los Angeles and schedule Valley site visits in batches so the drive never slows your project down.
