Bird & critter guard
Solar panel bird and critter guard in Palmdale and the Antelope Valley
Pigeons, squirrels and roof rats love the shaded gap under a solar array, and they cost you production, wiring and a clean driveway. We clean out what is there and fit durable mesh around the panels so it does not come back.
- 01Custom-fit to your array
- 02Clips on, no drilling
- 03Nest cleanup and wiring check included
- 04Works on any brand of panel
Who needs critter guard
Anyone with panels and pigeons, which in the Antelope Valley is most people eventually.
Pigeon colonies are a fixture of older neighborhoods in Palmdale and Lancaster, and a rooftop solar array is the most attractive nesting spot they have ever been offered. The signs show up fast: droppings on the panels and driveway, cooing at dawn, twigs in the gutters, and a monitoring app that shows a few panels underperforming. On rural lots the problem is more often ground squirrels and rats, which climb up and chew the wiring for the salt in the insulation.
If you have any of those signs, guard pays for itself in avoided cleanup and repairs. If your array is new and clean, guard is cheap insurance, especially if the panels went in under a warranty that does not cover animal damage, which is nearly all of them. We install it on systems we built and on systems other companies built, and we will inspect the wiring while we are up there. If we find damage, our maintenance and repair team quotes the fix.

Good fit if…
- Pigeons, droppings or nesting debris are showing up under or around the array
- Monitoring shows a few panels underperforming with no obvious cause
- A rural lot with squirrels or rats and exposed wiring under the panels
- A new array in a neighborhood with an established pigeon colony
Not the right fit if…
- Flush-mounted or roof-integrated panels with no gap underneath
- Wiring is already chewed or connectors are broken; that is a repair first, guard second
- The roof needs replacing soon; guard comes off with the array
- You expect guard to clean the glass; it keeps animals out, it does not wash panels
Benefits
What critter guard does for your solar system
- 01
Stops nesting before it starts
The shaded gap under a solar array is the best real estate on the roof for pigeons. Mesh around the perimeter closes the gap so they move on to the neighbor's roof instead.
- 02
Protects the wiring from chewing
Squirrels and roof rats chew insulation. A chewed conductor under an array is a fault at best and a fire risk at worst, and it is not covered by most panel warranties.
- 03
Keeps production up
Nests, droppings and debris pile up on the panels and under them. Clearing that out and keeping it out restores the output you paid for and keeps monitoring alerts quiet.
- 04
Custom-fit, durable materials
The mesh is cut to your array's exact perimeter and attached with clips designed for the panel frame. Nothing is drilled into the panel or the roof, and it holds up in desert sun and wind.
- 05
Blends in with the panels
Dark mesh follows the edge of the array and is nearly invisible from the street. Your roof looks the same as it did the day the panels went up.
- 06
Easy to maintain and service
Clip-on sections come off in minutes if a technician ever needs to reach a microinverter or optimizer, then go back on. No permanent modification to the system.
The process
How a critter guard install works
Usually a single visit: inspect, clean, fit and photograph.
What to know before you order critter guard
Materials, fit, cleanup and what it does not do.
Materials that survive the high desert
The mesh has to handle two things Palmdale does better than anywhere: ultraviolet exposure and wind. Cheap plastic netting goes brittle in a couple of summers and starts shedding pieces into the gutter. We use durable coated metal mesh sized to keep out birds and rodents while letting air and water pass, and clips made for solar panel frames rather than screws or adhesives. Properly fitted, it should last as long as the panels.
Custom fit matters
Every array has a different perimeter: multiple roof planes, gaps where the array steps around a vent, tile roofs where the panel-to-roof height varies along the edge. Birds find the one section that was skipped. We measure and cut each run to the actual gap and pay attention to corners and transitions, which is where most do-it-yourself jobs fail.
Cleanup first
Sealing an array with nests still under it makes the problem worse, so we remove nesting material, droppings and debris before the mesh goes on. Accumulated droppings are corrosive and unpleasant, and the cleanup is where much of the labor goes on a badly infested roof. We give you a clear quote after inspection rather than a flat number that assumes a clean array.
Wiring inspection
While the array is open we check the conductors, connectors and any microinverters or optimizers for chew damage, corrosion or loose connections. Rodent damage to wiring is a common cause of ground faults and mysterious production drops. Any electrical repair is done under our C-10 license (CSLB #1105123) and quoted separately.
What it does not do
Critter guard keeps animals from getting under the panels. It does not clean the tops of the panels, and it will not stop birds from perching on the array itself, which is harmless apart from the mess. It also does not require a permit, since nothing is altered electrically or structurally. If your system needs more than guard, our service team handles diagnostics and repairs, and if you are thinking about adding a battery at the same time, the financing page and incentives page cover how that works.

Why SunCoast
A solar crew, not a pest company
- 01
We know what is under the panels
Our installers work around solar wiring and microinverters every day. A pest company can hang mesh; we can also see when a connector has been chewed and fix it.
- 02
Licensed and insured on your roof
General building and C-10 electrical licenses, with insurance that covers roof work. That matters when someone is walking on your tile.
- 03
Local, quick to schedule
We are in Palmdale and guard is a short job, so it usually gets scheduled within days rather than weeks.
- 04
Any brand, any installer
Most guard we install goes on systems we did not build. If your original installer is gone, we are the call.

Tell us how many panels you have and what you are seeing. We will schedule an inspection and give you a written price for cleanup and guard, and a separate note if any wiring needs attention.
- 01Custom-fit mesh, clipped on without drilling
- 02Nest removal and cleanup included in the quote
- 03Wiring inspected while the array is open
Questions
Critter guard questions
01Why do pigeons nest under solar panels?
The space between the panels and the roof is shaded, sheltered from wind and warm at night, which is ideal nesting habitat in the high desert. Once one pair moves in, the flock follows. Nests block airflow, droppings corrode the racking and stain the roof, and the mess ends up in the gutters and on the driveway.
02Can critter guard damage my panels or void the warranty?
Not when it is installed with clips designed for the panel frame. We do not drill into panels, frames or roofing, so there is nothing to void. The mesh sits at the perimeter and does not shade the cells.
03Do you clean out existing nests and droppings first?
Yes. Installing mesh over an active nest traps the problem in place. We remove nests and debris, clean under the array and inspect the wiring before the guard goes on. Heavy accumulation is quoted separately after we see it.
04Will the guard block airflow and make the panels run hotter?
No. The mesh is an open grid that lets air move freely under the array, which is important in Palmdale summers. It only stops animals and large debris, not ventilation.
05Can you install critter guard on a system you did not install?
Yes. Most of the guard we install goes on systems other companies put in, including systems whose installer has since gone out of business. It fits standard framed panels from all the major manufacturers.
06Is bird guard worth it if I do not have pigeons yet?
If your neighbors have them, you will. Installing guard on a clean array is cheaper than installing it after a cleanup and a wiring repair, and it protects the system for its whole life. It is a good add-on when we service or expand an existing system.
