Who should install a Level 2 charger at home

If you drive an EV in the Antelope Valley, the commute alone makes the case.

Plenty of Palmdale and Lancaster residents drive over the hill to the San Fernando Valley or downtown Los Angeles every day. That round trip drains a big chunk of an EV battery, and the 120-volt travel cord that comes with the car can take more than a full day to put it back. A Level 2 charger on a 240-volt circuit does the same job overnight, which turns the EV from a planning exercise into a car.

It is an even better fit if you have or want rooftop solar. Under SCE’s NEM 3.0 tariff, exported afternoon production earns a small credit; sending that same energy into a car parked at home turns it into miles at almost no cost. Enphase and SolarEdge chargers can be set to do exactly that automatically. Add a battery and you can charge from stored solar after dark, too.

Good fit if…

  1. You drive an EV, or one is on order, and commute SR-14 or over the hill most days
  2. You have a 200-amp panel, or room for a load-management device on a smaller one
  3. You have or plan solar and want to charge from midday surplus instead of exporting it
  4. You want a permitted, inspected 240-volt circuit rather than an extension cord

Not the right fit if…

  1. You drive short distances and the 120-volt cord that came with the car keeps up
  2. Your 100-amp panel is full and you are not ready for an upgrade; we will quote it, but it is a bigger job
  3. You rent and the owner will not approve electrical work
  4. You park on the street with no safe route for a cable

Benefits

Why a professionally installed charger is worth it

  1. 01

    Full charge overnight, every night

A Level 2 charger on a dedicated 240-volt circuit refills most EVs while you sleep. The 120-volt cord that came with the car cannot keep up with a Palmdale-to-LA commute.

  2. 02

Charge from the roof, not the grid

Enphase and SolarEdge chargers talk to their matching solar systems, so you can set the car to soak up excess solar at midday instead of exporting it to SCE for a small credit.

  3. 03

Cheapest miles you will ever drive

Fueling an EV from your own panels costs a fraction of gasoline, and SCE offers time-of-use rate plans built for EV owners who charge off-peak. We help you pick the right one.

  4. 04

Installed by licensed electricians, with a permit

A 40- or 50-amp circuit is not a handyman job. Our C-10 electricians run it, the city inspects it, and the charger is covered by its manufacturer warranty because it was installed correctly.

  5. 05

    Panel upgrades handled if needed

Older Antelope Valley homes often have 100-amp panels that are already full. We do the load calculation and, if the panel needs an upgrade or a load-management device, we price it up front.

  6. 06

    Future-proofed for a battery

If a battery is in your plans, we size the conduit and panel space now so the charger can join a backup or self-consumption strategy later without redoing the work.

The process

How an EV charger install works

Usually a half day of electrical work, plus the permit and inspection we manage for you.

  1. 01

    Panel and parking check

We look at your electrical panel capacity, where the car parks and how far that is from the panel, and whether you have or plan solar.

  2. 02

    Charger and circuit recommendation

Enphase or SolarEdge depending on your solar, hardwired or plug-in, and the amperage your panel can support. You get a fixed written price.

  3. 03

    Electrical permit

We pull the permit with your city or county. EV charger circuits are inspected, and a permitted install is what protects your homeowner's insurance and the charger warranty.

  4. 04

    Installation

Our C-10 electricians run the dedicated circuit, mount the charger, and handle any panel work. Most residential installs are finished in a few hours to a day.

  5. 05

    Inspection and app setup

After the inspection we connect the charger to Wi-Fi, link it to your solar monitoring where applicable and set a charging schedule around your rate plan.

What to know before installing an EV charger

Amperage, panel capacity, placement and rate plans, explained simply.

Charger and circuit size

Level 2 chargers come in different amperages. A higher-amp charger fills the car faster but needs a larger circuit and more room in the panel. For most Antelope Valley commuters a mid-range circuit charges the car fully overnight; a larger one matters if you have two EVs or drive very long days. We match the circuit to your car, your driving and your panel rather than defaulting to the biggest option.

Panel capacity

The main electrical panel is the most common surprise. Homes built in the 1980s and 1990s across Palmdale and Lancaster often have 100-amp service, and once central air conditioning, an electric dryer and a range are accounted for there may be no headroom. Options are a panel upgrade, which is the cleanest long-term fix, or a load-management device that pauses charging when the house is drawing heavily. We do the load calculation during the site check under our C-10 license (CSLB #1105123) and quote the result before anything is scheduled.

Placement

The charger should be within cord reach of the car’s charge port, which varies by model. Inside a garage is ideal for shade and security. For a driveway or carport we use weather-rated hardware, and for a detached structure we run conduit across the yard, which is common on larger east-side lots. The route affects cost, so we look at it in person.

Solar integration and rate plans

An Enphase charger on an Enphase solar system, or a SolarEdge charger on SolarEdge, can be told to charge only from surplus solar, or to charge as fast as possible, or to follow a schedule. SCE offers time-of-use rate plans aimed at EV owners that make overnight charging cheap; the right plan depends on whether you also have solar and a battery. We help you set the schedule after the inspection so the car fills up in the cheapest window.

Permits, warranty and cost

Every city and county we serve requires a permit for a new 240-volt circuit, and the inspection is part of our job. Manufacturer warranties on chargers generally require licensed installation, so this is also how you keep the warranty valid. Financing is available for chargers bundled with solar or storage; see the financing page. Note that as of September 2026 the federal residential credits that once covered home charging equipment are not available to homeowners; the incentives page tracks any utility or state programs that apply.

Why SunCoast

Electricians who also understand your solar

  1. 01

    C-10 licensed, not a handyman

The circuit is installed by SunCoast Solar's C-10 licensed electricians and inspected by your city. That is what the charger warranty and your insurer expect.

  2. 02

We install the solar the charger talks to

Enphase and SolarEdge chargers are designed to pair with those solar systems. Because we install both, the integration is configured correctly the first time.

  3. 03

    Local pricing, local schedule

Based in Palmdale, we can do the site check quickly and give you a fixed price that includes the permit, not an online estimate that changes on install day.

  4. 04

    Planned around what comes next

Battery, second EV, panel upgrade: we leave room for the next step so you do not pay for the same wall twice.

Questions

EV charger questions

01Which EV chargers do you install?

Level 2 chargers from Enphase and SolarEdge. Both integrate with their own solar and battery systems, which lets you prioritize charging from excess solar production. If your car came with a manufacturer charger, we can usually install that too; ask and we will confirm compatibility.

02Do I need solar to get an EV charger from SunCoast?

No. We install chargers for homes without solar, and many customers add the charger first and the solar later. If solar is a possibility, tell us so we can leave conduit and panel space for it. If you are ready for both, one project saves on permits and trips.

03Will my electrical panel handle a Level 2 charger?

Often yes, sometimes not without help. A charger draws as much as a large air conditioner, so a 100-amp panel that already feeds central air, an electric range and a dryer may not have room. We run a load calculation and, if needed, install a load-management device or upgrade the panel. You will know the answer and the cost before any work starts.

04Does an EV charger installation require a permit in Palmdale or Lancaster?

Yes. A new 240-volt circuit is permitted electrical work in every city and county we serve. We pull the permit and schedule the inspection as part of the job. An unpermitted install can cause problems with your insurance and with the charger's warranty.

05How much does it cost to charge an EV at home in SCE territory?

It depends on your rate plan and when you charge. Overnight charging on an SCE time-of-use plan is far cheaper than daytime peak rates, and charging from your own solar costs the least of all. We will not quote a per-mile figure without seeing your bill, but we will help you set the charger's schedule to hit the cheapest window.

06Can I install the charger in a detached garage or carport?

Usually. The circuit has to run from the panel to the parking spot, which may mean trenching conduit across a yard. That adds cost but is routine. We look at the route during the site check and include it in the fixed price.
